Why Our Health Needs Balance

How would you assess or evaluate your health today? If you are like most people, you will answer that you are fine unless you have a medical diagnosis.

Many of us take our health for granted. Consequently, very few people are intentional in creating better health.

3 in 1

We are tripartite beings. Our being is composed of spirit, body, and soul. That implies that we have 3 important aspects of health to take care of.

Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 NLT

It is not enough to guard ourselves as “saints”. Here we read that we are invited to maintain all our spirit, soul and body. Maintaining requires effort and intentionality. It implies activity on our part.

Now, keeping all three requires balance.

To balance

Caring for the three aspects of our being can sound like a joggling act. And I suspect many neglect this balance.

It seems that many times we end up taking care of only one aspect, we rarely focus on two aspects simultaneously, and we practically never think about taking care of all three at the same time. Some lose weight at the expense of their emotional health. Others are spiritually full and satisfied but do not take care of their physical health. Others neglect the soul and do not seek to heal their roots of bitterness or overcome their traumas.

With the rush we live today it may seem mission impossible to maintain our spirit, soul, and body balanced in health. Exercising for the health of the body, praying and reading the Bible for the health of the spirit, and detoxifying the soul are 3 routines difficult to implement in daily life. Adding 3 commitments to a daily schedule for many sounds like more harm than the good that it could cause them.

Balance means a state in which a body is found when the forces acting on it are equal and opposite and cancel each other out.

Balance is a state we can reach. Our being in balance means that anything impacting our spirit, soul, and body will compensate each other and cancel each other out. In other words nothing stands out. This means striving to care for all 3 areas and not neglecting any one of them.
