Not Become Your Identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before attending Black Tech Week, I experienced an unexpected career transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just days before the conference, I received the news that my employer and I were going separate ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And suddenly, an event where I originally planned to build relationships and explore professional connections became something different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I now had a new strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I needed to approach the room not only as a professional looking to connect, but also as someone searching for what was next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had to dust off my resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had to prepare myself for conversations about opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if I&#8217;m honest, I had to fight the temptation to walk into that space carrying the weight of what had happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But then I realized something:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Just because you experience a setback does not mean you have to walk into a room with a failure identity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those are two very different things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A setback is something that happened to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A failure identity is something you accept about yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you get to choose which one leads the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Everyone Understands Transition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the biggest lessons I learned at Black Tech Week was this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost everyone is navigating some type of transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people are building companies from the ground up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some are searching for investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some are changing careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some are trying to grow into their next level of leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some are rebuilding after something didn&#8217;t work out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some are quietly asking themselves, <strong>&#8220;What comes next?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transition is not something to be ashamed of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transition is part of growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is not whether you will experience transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is: <strong>How will you show up during it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People are drawn to hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not fake positivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not pretending everything is perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Real hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The kind of hope that says, &#8220;I may not have everything figured out, but I know God is still working.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remember Your Wins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the things I intentionally practiced before Black Tech Week was talking about my accomplishments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because I wanted to impress people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But because I needed to remember who I was and what I bring to the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes we become so focused on what we lost that we forget everything we built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your experience still matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problems you solved still matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people you impacted still matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The teams you led, the relationships you built, and the systems you improved still matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One employer does not determine your value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your value was never owned by your job title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your title may change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your role may change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your organization may change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the gifts God placed inside of you travel with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Discover Your Magic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the biggest shifts I experienced at Black Tech Week was becoming comfortable talking about my own magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had never really described myself that way before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I started asking a different question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What changes when I show up in a room?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That question is powerful because your value is not only found in what you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is found in how you do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What do people consistently thank you for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What problems do you naturally solve?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What energy, perspective, or ability do you bring that changes the environment around you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is your magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Know it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Own it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be willing to talk about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It Is Okay to Edit Your Story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most honest things I realized during this season is that I was editing my story in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because my career transition happened so unexpectedly, I had to find the truest parts of my story without allowing the ending of one chapter to become the focus of every conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When people asked, &#8220;So, what do you do?&#8221; I found myself saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m editing in real time.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you know what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not have to pretend you have everything figured out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m in a season of transition.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m exploring where I can create the greatest impact.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m building what&#8217;s next.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is honesty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We live in a world where editing is normal. Photos are edited. Videos are edited. Stories are edited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when it comes to our own lives, we often feel pressure to only show the finished product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The truth is, growth happens during the editing process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God is still working in the unfinished parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Focus on What Is Still Good<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most important questions we can ask during difficult seasons is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is the most positive thing about this situation?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because we ignore the pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because disappointment doesn&#8217;t matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But because what we focus on shapes how we show up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe this season gave you clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe it revealed strengths you didn&#8217;t know you had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe it gave you courage to pursue something you had been avoiding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe it helped you realize your identity was too connected to your position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that realization is a gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hope is attractive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discouragement pushes people away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But hope invites people closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you walk into a room with confidence, purpose, curiosity, and faith, people can feel it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Biblical Reminder: Get Back Up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I reflected on this experience, I kept returning to Proverbs 24:16:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I love that this verse does not say the righteous never fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It assumes they will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following Christ does not mean we avoid disappointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faith does not guarantee every interview leads to an offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faith does not mean every business decision works out exactly as planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But faith reminds us that our story does not end with the fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference is not that we never fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference is that we rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe your fall was losing a job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe it was a failed business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe it was a dream that did not happen the way you imagined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whatever your fall is, do not confuse your circumstances with your identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your job may have ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your purpose did not.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever walked into a room and felt like you had something to prove?
